Inspiration mapping

UC San Diego is a campus deeply rooted in environmental awareness, drawing inspiration from local wildlife was a natural direction for us. The teams names went with the mascot native to the region growing the cohort identity in a sense of place and campus pride. Apart from choosing the 18 mascots, our color exploration directly informed the color palette for the mascots illustrations as we wanted to make sure the animals felt integrated with the corresponding flag backgrounds as well.
The four background patterns that we would alternate between per mascot.

This collage showcases the final set of animals mascots Sam Olsen and I made into the completed flag system. The final lineup includes pelicans, hermit crabs, sea urchins, garibaldi, octopuses, monarch butterflies, moles, weasels, pocket gophers, dolphins, sharks, blue herons, honey bees, seagulls, sea lions, alligator lizards, coyotes, racoons, hummingbirds, pumas, and bats. Together these became the visual backbone of the 18-team identity system.
Final Designs
The assets below were the final deliverables that were designed for print in 2 differing printing techniques (image transfer and standard cardstock) and then laminated.
